This year is just flying by! The K-2 kids have been working hard on improving catching skills using scarves, and now we are moving into the underhand toss with a partner using foam balls. In 3-5th grade the students have been learning to juggle two scarves using one hand. There are quite a few of them who can now juggle, with the rest of them being very close! The 3-5 group is now going to start working on the overhand throw with a partner.

Happy fall everyone! Hopefully the temperatures outside start to match the season. We are moving right along in elementary PE. The past couple of weeks, students have been working in a variety of locomotor skills, including jogging, running, sprinting, hopping, galloping and skipping. The older students are moving forward a little quicker than the younger ones, because most of them have mastered these movements. Third through fifth grade are starting to work on catching, while kindergarten through second grad continue to improve their locomotor skills. This year is flying right on by already! It is hard to believe there is only one more week until Labor Day. This coming week will be our last week using the parachute for games. The parachute is a great activity for the kids to build teamwork, and have some fun. Alas, it is time to move on. The younger grades will start working on locomotor skills after Labor Day. Skills such as leaping, skipping, galloping and hopping. The older students are going to start working on manipulative skills, like throwing and catching. If you haven't heard about Class Dojo from your child, it is a great way to see how they are doing in PE. Class Dojo is an Internet program where students can earn points for positive behaviors. They also lose points for any poor choices they make. However, the real emphasis is on earning points, and learning from mistakes. If you sign up for an account, you need a code from me to connect with your child and their progress. Please email me at [email protected] if you would like an invitation code so you can be updated on your child's progress in PE. Please let me know who your child is, too, so I get you the correct invitation code. There is also an app for iPhone and Android phones where you can get updates on your child. I will be attending curriculum night on September 1st to discuss the standards I will be teaching, Class Dojo and homework. Have a great weekend! Mr. Hall It is hard to believe that the first week of PE is already in the books. The week has been spent going over expectations for our class, as well as expectations for taking care of our brand new basketball court. The remaining time was spent with parachute games. Due to today's heat advisory, the Friday classes will be held inside, using the Adventure to Fitness website. Anytime there is a severe weather advisory, PE will be relocated inside for the safety of students. We will continue building up teamwork and community in elementary PE by playing cooperative games with the parachute for the next two weeks. We will also be playing some fun games using pool noodles that will help build motor skills, and be a lot of fun as well! Have a great weekend! Mr. Hall Welcome back to another fun-filled school year! My name is Tim Hall and I am the Kindergarten through 5th grade Physical Education teacher. The purpose of the Physical Education program at Tucson Country Day School is to encourage life-long physical fitness. This goal will be accomplished by giving students the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of skills, games, and activities.
Throughout the year we will be practicing and improving a number of skills, from movement (hopping and skipping, for example) to coordination (throwing, catching, and kicking). We will also perform an assortment of activities and exercises each period that will help improve their level of physical fitness. Games will be a large part of class as well. Students will play both cooperative and competitive games to use the skills they have learned, and to learn ways to enjoy physical activity. All students this year will be meeting for Physical Education one time every week. Kindergarten through 3rd grade students will meet for 40 minute classes, while 4th and 5th grade students will meet for 45 minute classes. Students in 4th and 5th grade will have weekly activity logs to fill out. These activity logs are done to promote a physically active and healthy lifestyle by encouraging students to think about the time they spend being active and reflect upon how they felt after exercising. The activity logs are mandatory homework, and are a part of their grade in Physical Education. Please be aware of when your child is going to have Physical Education, and make sure that they are dressed appropriately for physical activities (proper shoes and clothing for the weather), as well as a water bottle to help them stay hydrated. I am very excited to start the school year, and am looking forward to a fun, healthy and successful year! Sincerely, Mr. Hall Starting this week, we will be moving on from the parachute and will start working on locomotor skills, such as skipping, galloping and hopping. The kinder through 3rd grade students will practice the movements and then use them in games. The 4th and 5th graders will mainly use them in games, and will only be practicing them if they are struggling with any of the locomotor skills Have a great week! Mr. Hall The first week of Physical Education is over! Expectations have been reviewed, procedures have been set, and we are ready to have a great school year. We will be using the parachute throughout the rest of the month to build teamwork and community within the classes. We will be using the parachute for a wide variety of games and activities. In week two, 4th and 5th graders will be receiving their first activity log homework assignment of the year. These will be handed out every week, and collected the following week. The activity logs are designed to promote healthy activity levels outside of school, as well as to provide some math and writing practice. Students are required to turn them in, otherwise their PE grade will suffer. Also starting in the 2nd week is Class Dojo. This is a classroom management system where students earn points for showing positive behaviors, and can lose points for any negative behaviors. I will be sending students home with an invitation for you to set up a parental account. This will let you receive weekly updates on how your child is doing in my class. It is a wonderful system that really stresses making positive choices. Students can also set up accounts so they can see their point totals, as well as edit their avatars. Please be on the lookout for these invitations! If your child loses it, please contact me with your email address and I will have another invitation sent to you through email. Have a great Friday and a wonderful weekend! Mr. Hall |
